Bawali | 24 PGS (S) | West Bengal |
Just 35 km
away from Kolkata, Bawali is the place to curl up with a book or to seat on the
farmhouse balcony overlooking the green paddy fields and ponds or going for
long village walks . In the evenings, you can sit around a campfire and chat
with your friends and family. Children are guided by trained people to climb
trees and pluck fruits at the farmhouse orchard. Tree houses in the farm are
great attractions for children.
Best Time
To Visit
Anytime of
the year.
How To
Reach
You can
take trains from Sealdah to Budge Budge Station. From Budge Budge Station (now
renamed as Komagata Maru Budge Budge Railway Station) you can take auto
rickshaws to reach Bawali. If you are taking the road, then you can take the
road connecting Thakurpukur to Bakrahat or Taratola to Bakrahat to reach
Bawali. Buses like SD76 would also take you to Bawali from Kolkata.
Place Of
Interest
The
greatest attraction of Bawali is the 300 year old Bawali Raajbari and its
adjacent Navratna Gopinath Temple built during the same time. It is believed
that Rani Rashmoni built the famous Dakshineshwar Temple inspired from the
architecture of this temple in Bawali. A visit to the temple ruins and the
recently renovated Rajbari with its antique furniture, sprawling lawns and
verandahs lined with enormous pillars would be a nice experience. The famous
Boro Kachari Mandir is around 6 kms from here. The Barood Ghar (ammunition
depot) of the British army located just beside the river is worth a visit.
BIRDWATCHING
Bawali and its surrounding villages have a good collection of migratory birds. Wagtails, Parakits, Barn Owls and a whole lot of bee-catchers, kingfishers, and local species are found in abundance here due to the lush greenery all around. A nearby village named Burul becomes home to thousands of cranes, cormorants, and storks between their nesting season of June and September.
VILLAGE WALKS
There is a village of 300 households. The outskirts of Bawali is marked by infinite stretches of paddy fields and flower farms dotted with thatched mud houses. You can hire a bicycle so that you take a ride along the bumpy muddy village roads. An arched alley made of red bricks and pillars with Victorian flower motifs shall lead you to the temple.
READING VACATION AT THE FARMHOUSE
Take your favorite book and slip into Bawali farmhouse. The most secluded cottage facing the paddy fields and ponds would be allotted to you with a steady supply of tea and coffee. Take a village walk after your long reading sessions. Food could be served in your room too.
Food
Another
great attraction of Bawali farmhouse is its food. Here you can choose from
nearly 500 recipes of authentic Bengali food – from the eternal snack of Mochar
Chop in the evenings to the rich Dhaka styled Bhapa Ilish in the lunch. If you
are a foodie, then there is whole new avenue for you to discover. You can
choose to order the favorite dishes of Rabindranath Tagore and Acharya Jagadish
Chandra Bose too.
